DISCUSSION 1 : CHAPTER A UNIT 1,2,3

Hello Guys? How was your holiday? I hope you enjoyed it! Now we need to discuss it again and move to the Pragmatics subject. Did one of you already know about it? What is Pragmatics? And why should we learn about it? To answer all of your questions we need to start our discussion, right?!  We start to discuss Chapter A units 1, 2, and 3 that you've already read, so what things do you learn after reading about that?

A. Introduction : Concepts in Pragmatics and Discourse (Unit 1, 2, & 3)

A.1 Context A1.1     Pragmatics and Discourse analysis : they both study context, text and function 1.       Context : Pragmatics and Discourse analysis study the meaning of words in context, analyzing the parts of meaning that can be explained by knowledge of physical and social world, and the socio-psychological factors influencing communication, as well as the knowledge of the time and place in which the words are uttered or written ( Stillwell Peccei 1999; Yule 1996). 2.       Discourse : Pragmatics and Discourse analysis look at discourse, or the use of language, and text, or pieces of spoken or written discourse, concentrating on how stretches of language become meaningful and unified for their users (Cook 1989) Pragmatics and Discourse analysis, they are both concerned with function:: the speakers’ short-term purposes in speaking, and long term goals in interacting verbally.   A nalysing the parts...
